How to Set Up Trail Cameras for Whitetail Deer
October 9, 2026 · 1 min read · Antler River Archery

Mid-October is the best time to tune your trail camera plan. Bucks are shifting from summer feeding patterns toward the pre-rut, and the photos you get now tell you where to hunt in November. Where to hang them.
Scrapes: active scrapes under a licking branch are the top spot from late October on. Pinch points: fence gaps, creek crossings and woodlot corners where travel funnels down. Southwestern Ontario's small woodlots and farm country create lots of these. Field edges: good for inventory, but bucks often reach them after dark. Set it up right. Mount the camera 3–4 feet high, angled slightly down. Face north or south to avoid sun glare and false triggers. Clear branches and tall grass from the frame, and point the camera along a trail rather than straight across it.
Settings that work. Use 3-photo bursts on trails and time-lapse on big fields. Turn on video at scrapes to see behaviour.
Go cellular to stay out. Every trip to pull a card leaves scent and pressure. A cellular trail camera sends photos to your phone, so you only walk in to hunt. Spypoint Flex M2 cellular cameras are a strong value pick, and a Stealth Cam Eco Mount makes it easy to aim a camera on a crooked tree. Read the data. Log the time and wind for each mature buck photo. Daylight pictures within 200 yards of a stand are your green light.
